Note: Please be mindful of businesses offering cheap soil testing and remediation services without a depth of experience with significant contamination. If it is cheaper than standard rates, it's probably because they aren't testing comprehensively.

USC’s Contaminant Level Evaluation & Analysis for Neighborhoods (CLEAN) project allows anyone in LA to collect and submit a soil sample for lead testing, at no cost. USC Public Exchange is working with the Dornsife Department of Earth Sciences to provide accurate information about lead contamination in soil and the resulting health implications. Through the CLEAN project, Los Angeles residents can collect soil samples from schools or backyards and mail them in to USC, or bring them to drop-off location sites in the Palisades, Santa Monica, and Altadena. USC researchers will collect, test, and analyze these samples, and post the anonymized results online through an interactive map.

In the wake of the Eaton and Palisades Fires, disaster recovery experts from multiple universities have come together to expedite and empower household and business recovery decisions. Their efforts, as part of a data-informed civic action, will enable household members and business owners to be proactive recovery partners. We are asking owners of properties near the Palisades and Eaton Fires for permission to collect soil and water samples in their yards, gardens, and/or pools to test for possible wildfire pollutants. There is NO cost to the homeowner for the sampling or testing.
